TOMA L - FREVO

During his new exhibition, « WALLPAPER BOY » at Frevo Gallery in New York, Toma-L will present his series of wallpapers created in our workshop.

Thomas continues to establish his naive figures, made of paper collages, with an unrestrained, vigorous, exalted, and slightly tortured gesture. He fears neither the thick ink runs nor the ostentatious charcoal strokes, gashes, and snags, sometimes bordering on abstraction. In these works, painting, drawing, and collage no longer operate as separate acts. He paints as he draws. He paints his colors, selects them, then assembles these cut or torn papers to find the balance of his figures. Thomas draws here with his scissors in color; the cutting process unites the painting and the line. Thomas continues his practice of « automatic writing »: he breaks down the limits assigned to the artwork, using his painted wallpapers as the background for some pieces. This recurring motif matrix presented as a background on wallpaper slightly skews the traditional viewing path, which is spontaneously drawn to the center. A back-and-forth movement operates between the center and the periphery. His pictorial writing unravels and reweaves itself differently.
